DASCH: A trip back in time and space with Harvard

By Matt Tempesta

The skies above Boston are changing every day: stars explode, meteors slam into planets, distant galaxies converge. While these changes may not be visible to the naked eye, scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics are making it possible to track the changes that have taken place over the last 100 years.

By scanning more than 500,000 photographic glass plates taken from telescopes from around the world, Josh Grindlay and his team are compiling a massive database of celestial activity dating back to the late 1800s.

In this video, you'll see first-hand how the project works, with several member of the DASCH team (Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard) to explain why it's so important.
