For most children learning to read is an uphill struggle, and for low-income kids the fight can be even tougher. But a group of student volunteers from Emerson College is doing everything they can to give these kids a leg up

Encircled by a group of four year olds, Ashley Tarbet reads a story about a hen making a pizza. At first the children sit quietly while listening to how the hen searches for ingredients for her pizza. But as the story unfolds the children climb up to their knees and creep forward a bit. By the time the hen is enjoying her pizza with a few of her friends the excited kids practically have their noses in the book.
Tarbet is at the Dorchester Place Preschool, along with a group of other volunteers from Emerson College. The group is taking part in a day of reading organized by Jumpstart, at program that works with young children on literacy.
For many of the volunteers, it is their first day working in the program reading to children, but their contributions have a fast impact.
Candice Mundy, a teacher at Dorchester Place, said that having the volunteers from Emerson come to her class is a big help to her, and that the kids enjoy it because they love being read to.
"We go through so many books each week," she said, grateful for the change of pace the volunteers offer.
There is little doubt the children of Mundy's class enjoy the experience, but they aren't the only ones to get something out of it.
Tarbet said that her experience in the program has not only helped her find some direction in what she wants to do in life, but is also giving her valuable experience for the future.
After starting with the program in her freshman year, Tarbet went on to add a political communications/social advocacy major. She sees her work with Jumpstart as helping to reverse some negative social trends.
"Many of the children we work with are low-income and are already behind in their learning," Tarbet said. "This means that if we don't intervene now then they will continue to fall exponentially behind their middle and upper-income peers as they get older."
Without proper education, many of these children will end up dropping out of school, failing to achieve well-paying jobs, and repeating the cycle all over again with their own children, Tarbet said.
But for now the group has engendered some excitement for reading in the children. They are on their way to a new class of students to read to, and as they move through door one of the kids yells "Ohh, Jumpstart!"
The moment gets a laugh out of the volunteers and the teacher, but it is exactly this kind of excitement that they both hope will translate to long term academic success for the students.
And the volunteers say they have seen improvements in the children who are in the Jumpstart program.
"I know my volunteering has made a change because I've seen the change that it has made," said Tarbet. "You can literally compare their writing from the first month in school to the last month against a child who is not in Jumpstart and see a significant difference in how much they improve."
The day has largely been a success. The group of volunteers made it around to several rooms full of kids who otherwise might not have gotten the attention of a small group story time.
And the teachers were mostly appreciative as well. "I thought we might be disruptive, but [the teachers] were actually really excited," one volunteer says on the way out of the building.
The teachers were excited, in fact, several said they were already looking forward to the next time the group could come back.

okay so i downloaded firefox. i've been using firefox for a while, and all a sudden when i x'ed out my firefox and opened it again it wont go to websites, it wont even say page not displayed. it will just be blank. so i unstalled it and re stalled it and it worked when it was launched from the reinstal but when i x'ed it out again and opened it it showed blank. does anyone know how i can fix this????.
