Local college students talk about "heterosexism" in sex education

A University of California Davis study defines heterosexism as bias towards heterosexual couples. It's a term that is used in part to describe the sexual education curriculum, which tends to only highlight couples comprised of a man and a woman.

Transgendered, gay or lesbian couples are hardly addressed in public high schools and the 2010 Washington Post article "School Board Hopeful Has New Focus," says gay-right activist groups across the nation are starting a movement addressing that. Advocates for homosexual sex-ed classes are fighting to prove the importance of a content-balanced curriculum, one that caters to all sexual preferences.

And this message is creating awareness nationwide.  The Health and Human Services agency is disbursing over $100 million dollars in federal funding in sexual education programs that will include information about contraception, abstinence and the highlight the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual or questioning teens.  The video below showcases a frank discussion between two college students whose sexual identity was different from the "norm", and how they struggled to understand their sexual identity throughout their high school and college years.
